Axel Wolf
With his impressive playing and interpretative art, Axel Wolf is considered one of today’s leading lutenists. With such partners as Dorothee Oberlinger, Irvine Arditti, Valer Sabadus, Stefan Temmingh, Sebastian Hess, Sergio Azzolini, Rüdiger Lotter and Joel Frederiksen, he performs in concerts all over the world. Concert tours have taken him to international festivals including those in Lucerne, Bruges, Utrecht and Edinburgh, to Rome, Tokyo, Sydney and New York, as a soloist or with such ensembles as Musica Fiata, the United Continuo Ensemble, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and The English Concert of London.
Alongside historical performance practice in the music of the Renaissance and the Baroque, Wolf dedicates himself to encounters with Jazz, as well as free improvisation in the duo “Flow” together with the saxophonist Hugo Siegmeth . This collaboration was presented on the CD also named “Flow”, on the TV production ARD Alpha Forum as well as several radio broad casts.
He composed and produced the music for the documentary film “Sonbol”; as soloist and accompanist he participated in diverse television productions of the BR, WDR and Radio Bremen. The CD “Requiem for a Pink Moon” with Joel Frederiksen and the Ensemble Phoenix Munich was awarded the 2013 Echo Prize in the category “Classical without Boundaries” . He has collaborated with such conductors as Ivor Bolton, Peter Schreier, Alan Curtis, Enoch zu Guttenberg und Joshua Rifkin in operatic, concert and CD productions.
In addition to numerous CD productions as a continuo player and accompanist, several solo recordings have been issued, including “Friends of the Lute” – Solo and Chamber Music of J .S . Bach, S .L . Weiss and J .G . Baron, “Opera for Lute” by Johann Adolph Hasse; Lute Music of Johann Sebastian Bach; and Works for Lute and Chitarrone by Ales sandro Piccinini, accompanied by the United Continuo Ensemble .
