WDR 3 RADIO BROADCAST: For Claudio Monteverdi's 450 Birthday, Ensemble Phoenix Munich combines Monteverdi's "Scherzi musicali" with a newly commissioned composition by Laurence Traiger.

Claudio Monteverdi wrote with his "Scherzi musicali" (literally "Musical Jokes") musical entertainment at the highest level, mostly on texts of love. The pieces are dance-like, especially in the volume from 1607, but they can also be bittersweet and expressive, as in the later volume of the same name published in 1632. Joel Frederiksen, bass, lutenist and leader of Ensemble Phoenix Munich sings also a highly expressive solo madrigal for bass from Monteverdi's „Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi“. Instrumental works from Biagio Marini, a composer and violinst who worked under Monteverdi in Venice, are also heard in this program with a new piece composed by Laurence Traiger on a text by Torquato Tasso.
