Scherzi musicali von Claudio Monteverdi

In the classical romantic instrumental music tradition, a scherzo is a fast, rhythmic, refined musical piece. Monteverdi, the great master of Italian early Baroque, did not know the term “scherzo.“ He understood the word in its original sense: merriment, dalliance, and trifle. His vocal instrumental “Scherzi musicali“ are music for entertainment: light, often dance-like, stanzaic and homophonous. The same goes for various collections from his contemporary Biagio Marini, who with his “Sonata sopra la Monica“ landed one of the hits of the Baroque age.

Musicians: Sabine Lutzenberger (Soprano, Recorder), Markéta Cukrová (Mezzosoprano), Joel Frederiksen (Bass, Archlute, Direction), Yuna Lee (Violin), Theona Gubba-Chkheidze (Violin), Domen Marincic (Viola da Gamba), Christoph Eglhuber (Theorbo), Michael Eberth (Harpsichord).
