Jan Čižmář

Jan Čižmář has focused on lute and guitar as an interpreter of historical plucked instruments. He performs regularly in Europe, Asia and the USA with orchestras and ensembles such as the Concertgebouworkest Amsterdam, Orkest van de 18de Euuw, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Collegium 1704, Ensemble Baroque de Limoges, Ensemble Elyma, European Baroque Orchestra, Britten Pears Baroque Orchestra, Vox Luminis, Lautten Compagney Berlin or Capella Cracoviensis. Jan Čižmář performed under the direction of musicians such as Frans Brüggen, Christina Pluhar, Giovanni Antonini, Christopher Hogwood, Václav Luks, Christophe Coin, Gabriel Garrido and Yannick NézetSéguin.

He can also be heard regularly in solo concerts with Renaissance and Baroque music. He initially studied in his hometown of Brno and continued his education at the Royal College of Music in London with Jakob Lindberg and at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag with Nigel North, Joachim Held, Mike Fentross and Christina Pluhar. Master classes have taken him to Hopkinson Smith, Evangelina Mascardi and Yasonuri Immamura. He is now a lecturer himself and teaches at the Janáček Akademia Brno. Jan Čižmář is founder and editor of the magazine “Kytara” (The Guitar). He also publishes in other music magazines and has given several sheet music editions including at the Bärenreiter Verlag.
